All About Me

My name is Nancy Martinez. I am Mexican American. I come from a big family that I am close with. I have five siblings. My older brother is a United States Marine. My sister is in college with me right now to be a nurse. Then I have three younger siblings. One is in high school. One is in middle school, and my youngest brother is in elementary school. I love them all dearly. I am a waitress at a Mexican restaurant in Pawtucket. I have been in the restaurant industry for about three years. First as a hostess and then I became a waitress. A hobby I enjoy is hiking. I have been to a couple of very memorable hiking spots. Some in New Hampshire I even hiked the Grand Canyon for five days and I had so much fun. In school I am majoring in Early Education. I want to become a teacher because I believe kids are the most impressionable and need the most help and attention. I am excited to be in college and look forward to all I learn... :)

    LOVE YOUR PICS... what restaurant do you work at? I love Mexican food but have only found a few places that satisfy my California taste buds!

When I read this article, I could not help but connect it to my own learning think back to when I was a student. Shannon Renkly and Katherine Bertolini are the authors to  Shifting the Paradigm from Deficit  Oriented Schools to Asset Based  Models: Why Leaders Need to  Promote an Asset Orientation in our  Schools . They argue the importance of switched techniques when teaching. “Positive development emphasizes strengths  over weaknesses, resilience over risk, and assets over deficits” This quote stood out to me the most because I personally tend to be gentler and look at the bright side of things. Not in a "sugar coating" sort of way but more of looking at the picture. Many times, in school a student can feel as though they are not good at something and lose interest or even momentum. The student would rather step away and push away because they do not want to be "bad" a something.
