1. Privilege, Power, and Differences! #1

In the book Privilege, Power, and Differences written by Johnson he brings to light that there are so many injustices and problems in our society. He explains the issues at hand, come from differences. Weather it is different race, gender, sexuality, etc. The differences lead to power and privilege to a certain group. This has been set in place from our very own history. As he explores the issues his main argument is that we can all become a part of that solution if we did our part in being opened minded. He states, "Allows us to see not only where the trouble comes from, but how we as individuals are connected to it, which is the only thing that gives us potential to make a difference." this quote expresses his intentions to not talk about the past, but to look to our future in what we can do. One of the biggest points in we can do is truly reflect and think about our personal privilege. There are an exercise Johnson leaves for us to do. The diversity wheel is there for us to think about all the different categories, and how they make each of us individual. As I look reflect on this it shows me all the possible ways I am privileged. what Johnson made me think and reflect on is truly, yes there are ways that I am categorized in the not so privileged group. I am lower class who has struggles to make ends meet. I am not white. I am a woman who worries for her safety. But also, I have certain privileges. I am Christian one the most dominant religions. I am privileged enough to get an education and study. I am able bodied and that is a privilege. It can feel uncomfortable to share these things, but it also changes the way you look and see certain things. What I got from this reading is that if one can acknowledge our own privilege we can use that for good things. Such as being allies and truly giving a voice and space to those who are not. It is easy to stay comfortable but the only way to see a change in our society is by looking into our selves first.

One question that I can bring to the class is, why is it more challenging to view our privileges and own them, than to talk about our disadvantages? this question can feel very blunt and may be slightly uncomfortable, but it is definitely necessary to question ourselves and learn as much as we can about society. A teacher will see all kinds of students and has to be able to understand them in doing so thinking or all privileges and disadvantages.
